Why Family Safety is Scary

January 23, 2018

All families want to be safe. But not all families are proactive in keeping themselves secure. I realize that not everyone wants to read what I write about on The Secure Dad. There are people who sleep with one door unlocked, who put their whole lives on social media and pay no attention to who is around them at Target.

The world is a beautiful place, but sometimes it’s scary. Sometimes the scary stuff is all around us and we don’t see it. Just because we choose not to acknowledge potential danger doesn't make us safe.

Many families don’t want to think about their safety because in order to do so they must accept that something bad could happen to them.

I call this living in a bubble. Inside this bubble everyone has a well-paying job, everyone lives by the Golden Rule and a policeman will appear out of thin air when they need one. I wish this were true, but the real world doesn't work that way.

I think all parents need to realize that just by thinking about how to save your family from a house fire doesn’t mean that you’re going to set it ablaze. It’s not morbid to think about what to do when you smell smoke. It’s careless not to think about a fire escape plan until you’re on fire. We can’t protect or families effectively if we are not prepared.

Sometimes we’re lazy about our family’s safety. We don’t take the steps to protect ourselves because we feel other aspects of our lives are more important. This is why instead of changing out the bulb in the porch light, we decided to watch football. We decided that the importance of watching football is more important that our family’s safety.

No one would ever admit that. That sounds callous and self centered, not what parents are supposed to be at all. But yet we do it. We do all manner of things before we think about adding lighting to our homes, checking our deadbolts or noticing who is watching us in public.

All families want to be safe and in order to do that, all families need to do something about it. Don’t live in a bubble anymore. It’s time to be proactive and empowered about making your family safer. Below are a few ways your family can be safer at home and in public.
