What Families Need to Know Before Visiting Universal Orlando and Epic Universe in 2026
If you’re planning a family trip to Universal Orlando in 2026, I’ve got good news for you: this can be an amazing vacation without the stress, chaos, and exhaustion that many parents expect from a big theme park trip.
I’ve been to Universal multiple times, including visits before and after the opening of Epic Universe, and I want to help you go in with realistic expectations and smart strategies.
This isn’t just another generic travel guide. My guide to Universal Orlando and Epic Universe is for families who want to save time, avoid headaches, eat well, protect their privacy, and make great memories together.
Is Universal Orlando Too Crowded?
One of the biggest questions people ask before going is: When should we go to avoid the crowds? Here’s my honest take: I have never felt like Universal was overwhelmingly crowded. That’s one of the reasons I’d choose Universal over Disney. It’s just so much more laid back.
Yes, there are people there. Yes, ride lines can get long. But I’ve never had that shoulder-to-shoulder, stuck-in-a-herd feeling that can happen at other parks.
Best Time to Visit Universal in 2026
If you want the lightest crowds, aim for January and February. The weather is usually cooler, which makes long park days much more comfortable. You’ll often find shorter waits, easier restaurant reservations, and a more relaxed pace overall. Avoid major holidays and school breaks if possible for the smoothest experience.
How Many Days Do You Need at Universal in Florida?
I recommend three full days:
Day 1 and 2: Universal Studios Florida and CityWalk
Day 3: Epic Universe
If you are a fan of Harry Potter, you may want to add an extra day. The details in all the different parks for Harry Potter are outstanding. Most fans would be happy just to spend the day in each of the all-encompassing worlds.
Should Families Stay at a Universal Hotel?
Yes, if your budget allows it. Staying on property makes the trip dramatically easier with transportation, convenience, and potential Express Pass benefits. I’ve stayed a Cabana Bay which is a fun, retro themed family hotel. There’s lots to do like bowling, arcades, movies, pools, and large rooms. Cabana Bay is located near the park, and you can ride the bus to CityWalk easily.

I’ve also stated at Loew’s Royal Pacific Resort Orlando. This is a high-end hotel that offers a walking path to CityWalk. It’s a wonderful place to say and they offer packages that include Express Passes. So if you want the express pass and want to say on property, this is a bundle you’ll want to take advantage of.
Is Universal Express Pass Worth It?
Yes. Your vacation time has value too. You’ll find that your time is worth more than your money at any theme park. So spring for the passes you won’t regret skipping the lines.
You can also buy Universal Express Passes at Sam’s Club if you have a membership.
Universal Lines: Use the Single Rider Line Like a Pro
Single rider lines can dramatically reduce wait times and are excellent for repeat rides. I do suggest that as a family you ride the attractions together first. Then if you want to go back, skip the long line and go right to the single rider line, that way you can reduce your wait time for a ride you’ve already experienced as a family. Also you can wait with a single rider and take advantage of the ride’s family room.
Universal Studios Family Rooms and Child Swap
Universal offers ride tiers for all comfort levels, from toddlers to thrill seekers. If you have a small child that can’t ride on a ride because of their age or height, don’t worry. Universal offers the family room for child swapping or for adults who don’t like extreme rides like the The Hulk.
For instance Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. Located in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has a family room that is air conditioned, offers bench seating, and shows Harry Potter movies. When riders are done, the pass by the family room and collect their people and head out. These features help families stay together and still enjoy rides when not everyone can participate.
Best Ride at Epic Universe: Mario Kart: Bower's Challenge
One of the biggest reasons families are excited about Epic Universe is that it is Universal’s newest park, filled with fresh lands, new attractions, and immersive experiences. One ride I strongly recommend is Bowser’s Mario Kart. This attraction combines motion simulation, interactive game play, and 3D effects to make you feel like you are inside the game.

The queue through Bowser’s castle is packed with fun details that longtime Mario fans will love. During the ride, use your steering wheel buttons wisely, turn your head toward targets, and fire accurately to outscore the rest of your family.
Scariest Ride at Epic Universe: Stardust Racers
Epic Universe features some incredible attractions, but Stardust Racers is not for the faint of heart. This is a high-speed roller coaster built for thrill seekers who enjoy intense drops, powerful launches, fast turns, and moments that can feel physically overwhelming. It is exciting, but it can also be intimidating for younger kids or anyone nervous about big coasters.

Families should think carefully before sending children onto this ride just because they meet the height requirement. A child may be tall enough to ride but still not emotionally ready for the experience.
Food at Universal Is Better Than Many People Expect
Use the app for mobile ordering, save time, and enjoy a wide variety of food. I do suggest the refillable drink cups at Universal. They work in all of the parks and allow you to have unlimited use of the Coca-Cola Freestyle Machines. This gets you soda, water, and sports hydration drinks.
Universal Pro Tip: Water
Water is free at Universal parks. Just bring a refillable bottle with you to use it at the Freestyle machines. You can also request a small cup of water from the restaurants, too. There is no charge for that.
Food Allergies at Universal Florida
If someone in your family has a food allergy, Universal does an excellent job of taking those concerns seriously. I was genuinely impressed with how well the process worked. In our group, one person had a gluten allergy, which meant they needed to avoid breads, wheat, and anything that could contain gluten.
When the allergy was flagged during ordering, the restaurant staff immediately treated it as important. The head chef personally came out to speak with us at every meal, reviewed the order item by item, and made sure everything met the guest’s dietary needs. The chef then prepared the meal in a separate cooking area so it would not come into contact with other foods.
That extra care gives families real peace of mind. Yes, it can take a little longer because the meal is being specially prepared, but the added wait was absolutely worth it. If your family is traveling with food allergies, don’t stress. Speak up, ask questions, and know that Universal is prepared to help keep your loved ones safe.
Epic Universe Pro Tip: The Oak & Star Tavern
Excellent barbecue, brisket sandwich, and fun live music atmosphere. Meals here can be prepared with food allergies in mind. I do suggest you get there early before lunch and dinner so you can find a seat inside in the air conditioning.

Facial Recognition at Universal
Families should know that Universal uses facial recognition technology at entry that it calls photo validation. When you first enter the park, you will scan your ticket and be asked to look at a camera. The system takes your picture and links it to your ticket so the park can verify that the same guest is using that pass throughout the trip. It's also safe to assume that cameras inside the park are using this safe facial recognition system. This is optional but adults will have to present a photo ID and tickets to gain entry. I do not know if they scan or make a photo copy of your ID.

This helps prevent ticket sharing and can speed up entry in the future. On later visits to Epic Universe, I noticed the system already recognized me, which made the process faster. Some lockers in the parks may also use facial recognition or fingerprint access, too.
You can read more about this at Universal's privacy page where they discuss photo validation and alternatives.
Security Screening at Universal Orlando
Families should know that security screening works a little differently depending on which Universal park you visit. At Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, security is handled before you enter Universal CityWalk Orlando. This means bags are checked and guests pass through metal detectors one time at the main entrance area.
Once you clear that checkpoint, you can move into CityWalk and then head to either park entrance without repeating the full screening process. It is an efficient setup that helps traffic flow between the shopping, dining, and park areas. You can read the full list of prohibited items at all the Universal parks and attractions.
At Epic Universe, the process is different. Security takes place just before you scan you ticket to get in. Guests go through screening, then after passing inspection walk forward to scan their tickets, and then complete the photo validation process at entry. My advice is to travel light, keep phones and keys easy to access, and give yourself extra time during busy morning arrivals.
The Universal App
The Universal Orlando Resort App adds convenience with maps, wait times, and mobile food ordering, but it may also collect location, identifiers, purchases, and usage data. Families should decide what level of convenience they are comfortable with. My practical tip is to use the tools that help your trip run smoothly, then delete the app after your vacation if you prefer to limit ongoing data collection later.
Guide to Universal Orlando and Epic Universe: Final Thoughts
A great trip to Universal Orlando Resort in Florida is not about cramming every ride, meal, and attraction into one exhausting schedule. It is about making smart choices that fit your family, your budget, and your energy level.
Plan enough time, stay where it is convenient, use Express Pass or single rider lines when it makes sense, and build in time to rest and enjoy the details. Whether your family loves thrill rides, great food, or exploring new worlds at Epic Universe, thoughtful planning will turn a busy vacation into lasting family memories.
